Sodium glutamate, known under the name of Ajinomoto in Mauritius, will be banned for import.
This was announced by the Minister of Trade and Industry, Ashit Gungah in response to a question from Zouberr Joomaye. Ashit Gungah has, however, emphasized that this prohibition will not be applied to imported foods that contain this substance.
He, however, conceded that the Ajinomoto contains sodium, which can prove to be a “silent killer”. The Minister stressed that this substance has an effect on hypertension, which has already affected more than 240 000 adults in Mauritius.
