The Olympic torch is on its 20,000-kilometer journey from Athens, Greece to Rio de Janeiro, but while it was being carried through the Brazilian town of Maracaju in southwest Brazil Sunday, a man tried to extinguish the flame by tossing water toward the torch bearer from the roadside.
Watch video below:
According to the BBC, the man was arrested and told police that he was dared to do it. The flame continued to burn, fortunately, and the parade continued.
The torch does go out from time to time, though, and there’s a backup flame in case the official torch needs to be re-lit. In 2013 the flame blew out and was re-lit using an ordinary lighter.
Marcelino Mateus Silva Proenca (the man who tried to extinguish the fame) missed the torch and instead doused the torch bearer and the security guards surrounding him.
