Jessica Philippe could not provide bail for her conditional release due to lack of money. The inhabitant of Caroline who was arrested last Wednesday was sent back in police cell. She was wanted by the police of Bel-Air-Rivière-Seche since last month after abandoning her child of 18 months.
Her arrest follows a complaint dated Tuesday, June 28 made by a neighbor with whom Jessica left her child and never came back. The child was placed in a shelter by officers of the Child Development Unit.
Under the influence of alcohol
To justify herself, the young mother told investigators that she used to keep her baby under the supervision of her neighbor. “Je lui donne Rs 100 pour qu’elle garde mon enfant. Le mardi 21 juin, monn dir mo vwazinn ki mo pou donn li Rs 200 pou vey mo zanfan, parski mo ti pe al rod enn travay dan Grand-Baie. J’ai pu décrocher cet emploi. Mo ti byen okipe. Akoz li enn nouvo travay mo pann kapav pran konze. Ek mo pann gagn letan,” says Jessica Philippe.
However, she claims to have asked someone to fetch her child at her neighbor’s place. “Mais ma voisine a refusé de lui remettre le bébé. Si elle a porté plainte contre moi, c’est parce que j’ai tardé à lui donner son argent. Je suis mère de trois enfants et je ne les ai jamais abandonnés.”
In her testimony, the neighbor said a man actually came to pick the child. But she did not accept his request because he seemed to be under the influence of alcohol at that time. This is why she refused the man.
After her arrest, Jessica Philippe was interrogated. She appeared in court in Flacq where a provisional charge of ‘Abandoning child’ was brought against her.
