[Bollywood] SHOCKING: Director Found Guilty Of Raping An American Student!

Indian filmmaker Mahmood Farooqui has been found guilty of raping an American woman enrolled at Columbia University, THR reports. Farooqui faces a minimum sentence of seven years in prison and a maximum sentence of life in prison, and is expected to be sentenced on Tuesday. The rape took place at Farooqui’s home in Delhi in March of 2015. The victim, who is in her 30s, was first introduced to Farooqui by his friend Danish Hussain.

Farooqui co-directed the 2010 movie “Peepli Live” with his wife Anusha Rizvi. The film premiered at Sundance and was India’s entry for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.

The verdict is particularly significant due to a 2013 amendment that made forced oral sex a crime.

“This is perhaps one of the first cases of forced oral sex, which shows two things: that there was a crime for which we did not earlier have an offense named, now it has been recognized as rape,” the victim’s lawyer Vrinda Grovertold the Indian Express. “We’re also very happy to see that the court relied on very credible evidence that the woman gave.”

Farooqui’s wife told the Hindustan Times, “Our fight for justice is by no means over. We will approach the High Court for justice that has been denied to us.”
