Local Authorities: 249 Municipal Land For Sale At Rs 2000

The goal, as announced in the last Budget, is that people who rent municipal land can acquire it. The procedures will be activated for the sale of 249 lots this week. A uniform price has been fixed at Rs 2000.

In Port-Louis, 24 municipal lands are currently leased to Rs 800 per month, two at Beau Bassin-Rose Hill, six at Quatre-Bornes and 217 at Curepipe. The municipality of Vacoas-Phoenix do not lease municipality land. Elles y ont fait construire leur maison,” said a source at the Ministry of Local Government, while stating that municipalities now lease more land.

This topic was discussed on August 24 at a meeting between the Minister of Local Government and the Chief Executive Officers of the town halls. A meeting at which the budget measures were reviewed.

It should be noted that the idea of selling municipal land to the occupants was launched by the city of Curepipe in 2014; a motion was approved by the City Council for land in Résidence Pitot.

The Lord Mayor and President of the Association of Urban Authorities Oumar Kholeegan says that cities have received several requests from people wanting to purchase municipal land in the past.

This practice already exists for state land afterthe amendment of the State Land Act in 2013.
