58 year old Basanti Langur, a resident of Petit-Raffray, started a fire to burn garbage on Monday September 5. However, the fire has spread to an enclosure that is next to her house and where thirty animals were sheltered. They were burned. The woman was arrested by the Goodlands police and released on parole in the evening. She appeared before the Bail and Remand Court under a provisional charge of “Damaging property by fire.”
The case dates back to Monday morning. The owner of the animals says she dropped her daughter to school when she noticed the fire upon returning home. She tried to help her animals but in vain. She was badly burned on the feet and had to be transported to the SSRN Hospital in Pamplemousses to receive care.
The Goodlands police was mended urgently at the scene. They have opened an investigation to determine the exact circumstances of this incident.
