Hayeshan Maudarbaccus had also been incarcerated in Moka Detention Centre, specifically in the cell where the constable Arvind Hurreechurn was found dead in the night from Saturday to Sunday. The witness in the Gro Derek case does not believe in the suicide theory.
“I was imprisoned in this cell too,” says Hayeshan Maudarbaccus. Considering the case of constable Arvind Hurreechurn, the star witness in the Gro Derek case has stayed in the cell number 14 of Moka Detention Center, where the police officer, arrested with two kilograms of heroin last week, hanged himself in the night from Saturday to Sunday.
While the Central Criminal Investigation Department (CCID) and the National Human Rights Commission have opened an investigation to determine the circumstances in which the hanging took place, a voice from the less unexpected sounds: that of Hayeshan Maudarbaccus. For the former steward of Mauritius Trochetia, it is hard to believe that a prisoner was able to hang himself in this cell. “I was speechless when I heard the news, because this place is subject to ongoing monitoring.”
Several rounds conducted
He explains that there is a surveillance camera in that cell, which allows the police to take a look at the detainees at any time. “One day, I handled a piece of paper and tried a game of checkers when two policemen arrived in the cell,” he says. Moreover, adds the star witness, “there are police officers specifically to make rounds at any time.”
He specifies that this cell is the only one of three to be equipped with a bathroom, toilet and a sink. It is by hanging a towel on the tap of the sink before sitting that the constable Arvind Hurreechurn hanged himself. But according to Hayeshan Maudarbaccus, “pa fasil met pandi. Kaso-la so plafon bien ot. Pou met pandi ar lavabo, li drol parski ena enn ti robine sa. Si la serviette est épaisse, alors on ne peut pas la nouer autour du robinet”
Repented member of Gro Derek network, Hayeshan Maudarbaccus has the status of star witness. He has got police protection but wonders how long it will last: “Nous avons aidé la brigade antidrogue à mettre des réseaux de drogue hors d’état de nuire. Il faut que l’État garantisse notre sécurité. De cette manière, d’autres témoins iront de l’avant pour dénoncer des réseaux mafieux.”
With the dismantling of the Gro Derek network, the Anti-Drug and Smuggling Unit conducted the seizure of Rs 180 million worth of heroin. Hayeshan Maudarbaccus, who worked on the Mauritius Trochetia was responsible for recovering drug from Madagascar before swinging it into the sea. Then, Bruno Casimir was recovering the drug in the sea before returning to the island on behalf of Dereck Jean Jacques.
