Feb. 8 marks the 52nd anniversary of the start of television in Mauritius. On this occasion, the Mauritius Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) will launch a new production called “Who Wants to be a Millionaire.”
This will be a competition modeled from the popular show of the TV channel TF1 “Who Wants to be a Millionaire?”, animated by Jean-Pierre Foucault, and has taken Indian television with “Kaun Banega Crorepati” whose main animator is the movie star Amitabh Bachchan.
A memorandum of understanding will be signed in this context with two foreign companies, one English and one Indian, for technical assistance for the completion of the issuance.
There will be 39 performances broadcast on a weekly basis. The winner could win up to Rs 1 million after obviously getting through the different stages. For the president of the board of the MBC, Mekraj Baldowa, the issue is twofold. “First, it will be a local issue that will attract a large audience, and then it will also return a good advertising.”
The first contacts with companies are already very encouraging. He hopes that by December, the MBC will have a better idea of what this new issue could fetch.
He also announced that this production will be followed by a financial audit because he wants everything to be done transparently. The identity of the host of the show will be known in December.
Mekraj Baldowa adds that there will be more local achievements next year as the objective of the MBC is having up to 70% of local programs. At this stage, these emissions represent 42% of all TV programming.
