Hit-and-run: Mauritian National Killed, Friend Seriously Injured

A MAURITIAN national was killed while his friend was seriously injured in a hit-and-run incident on Kharar-Morinda road on Friday. The deceased was identified as Mukhtiar Singh, 19, a first- year student of Mass Communication and Journalism course at Chandigarh University, Ghruan. His father is an officer in Mauritian embassy in Russia. Police said that Mukhtiar’s family had been living in Mauritius for the past many years and had got citizenship of that country.

Mukhtiar along with his friend Siddharth was going to the university on a two-wheeler when they were hit by an unknown vehicle. His body was kept at the mortuary in Kharar civil hospital and would be handed over to his family on Saturday after a post-mortem. His parents had been informed about the incident, said the police.

According to the police, the accident happened near the Ashiana restaurant on Kharar-Morinda road, about 4 km from the CU campus, when an unidentified car coming from the opposite side hit Mukhtiar’s bike, leaving him dead on the spot. He suffered injuries on his head. Siddarth, who was riding pillion, was seriously injured.

The police officials said that some passerby told them that a man on bike overtook Mukhtiar and Siddharth from their left side at a high speed. A car was coming from the opposite side and the car driver in his effort to save the biker, lost control and hit Mukhtiar and Siddharth’s bike. Mukhtiar and Siddarth fell on the road. A passerby called the police and took both the victims to Kharar civil hospital where doctors declared Mukhtiar dead on arrival. Siddharth is undergoing treatment in the civil hospital.

The police started investigation after registering a case against unknown persons under Section 304-A (causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code at Kharar police station.

The varsity authorities said that Mukhtiar was a bright student and had an interest in photography.
