The name of Deven Sadyan, 55, was added to the long list of victims of road accidents. The fifty-year-old homeless was the victim of a road accident on Tuesday around 7:45 pm.
He was hit by a minivan on the main road of Rose Belle near the market. The driver abandoned his vehicle on the spot. The victim, whose identity has not been established at that time, died on the spot.
However, the driver of the van reported the accident to the police station of Rose-Belle on Wednesday around 1:45 PM. He is a 30-year-old police officer who was banned from duty. The officer was subjected to a breath test that was negative.
He spent the night in the police cell before being brought to the District Court. He was charged with manslaughter. The police objected to his release on bail.
Another victim of the road was registered on Wednesday November 16. It is Ebrahim Mahmod Juagoo, a 57-year-old resident of Port Louis. He was riding a motorcycle on Saturday night at Desforges Street when he was hit by another motorcyclist. The two men were taken to the Dr. A.G. Jeetoo hospital.
The fifty-year-old motorcyclist was seriously injured and admitted to the intensive care unit. He did not survive and was declared dead on Wednesday.
Since January, the number of road deaths has risen to 125, with accidents numbering to 113. Over the same period in 2015, the number of fatalities was 117 for 110 fatal accidents.
