The President of the Republic, Ameenah Gurib-Fakim, will face a wave of disputes within the Council of Ministers.
Will Ameenah Gurib-Fakim remain in the presidency? In her entourage, it is said that she feels hurt by the position of some ministers. There is even talk of her resigning.
One of the President’s visits to Pakistan and her personal involvement in the organization of the Pakistani week, from 20 to 27 October in Mauritius, would have prompted some ministers to raise their voices. “In view of the relationship we have with India, we can say that her close proximity to Pakistan has embarrassed us,” it is argued.
The frequencies the President travels abroad do not go unnoticed. Some official sources in the government argue that she has made more than 20 trips since she was appointed.
“If we count, we have exceeded millions of rupees,” it is said. The recent statement by Anil Gayan, Minister of Health and yet a member of the Muvman Liberator (ML) (Editor’s note: Ameenah Gurib-Fakim’s candidacy for President of the Republic had been proposed by Ivan Collendavelloo, ML), does not come at all to fix things.
If the popularity of the president seems to be falling with several ministers, it is up to us that other members of the government support her. “She is hated by many. But she does honor to the country, “said a deputy from a rural region of the militant Socialist Movement. On Friday, Showkutally Soodhun, who was acting as Prime Minister, also openly supported the head of state by saying “that she does us honor and that we should not listen to rumors”.
In the entourage of the president it is said that she is not going to make abrupt decisions and expects to be supported by the leaders of the government. However, she continues, she will not hesitate to slam the door if things get worse.
The President being on mission in India was unavailable for comment.
